Biography

Will Hartmann completed his studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne in 1993. He was awarded in numerous international competitions, including the Alexander Girardi competition for opera and operetta and the competition for Wagner singing in Straßbourg.

Starting his carreer successfully as a baritone for ten years he has then been constantly developing into the tenor-fach. He made his very successful debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in summer 1998 in the role of “Da-Ud” in the R. Strauss opera DIE ÄGYPTISCHE HELENA with Christian Thielemann conducting.

After his successful change to tenor in 2001 Will Hartmann have sung at all leading opera-houses, for example at the Bayerische Staatsoper (Jenik in BARTERED BRIDE, Maler in LULU, Tamino in THE MAGIC FLUTE, Matteo in ARABELLA), at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London( Macduff in MACBETH, Tamino in MAGIC FLUTE, Froh in DAS RHEINGOLD, Mark in MIDSUMMER MARRIAGE, Don Jose in CARMEN, Painter/Negro in LULU and Narraboth in SALOME), at the Scala di Milano ( Melot in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, Danilo in MERRY WIDOW), the Semperoper Dresden ( Matteo in ARABELLA, Danilo in MERRY WIDOW, Erik in FLYING DUTCHMAN), the Staatstheater Stuttgart (Pelleas in PELLEAS ET MELISANDE,Max in DER FREISCHÜTZ, Don Jose in CARMEN), the Deutsche Oper Berlin ( Max in DER FREISCHÜTZ, Pelleas in PELLEAS ET MELISANDE, Laca in JENUFA), at the Komische Oper Berlin ( Jenik in BARTERED BRIDE, Florestan in LEONORE), the Staatsoper Berlin (Max in DER FREISCHÜTZ) Wiener Staatsoper and Wiener Festwochen (Tamino in MAGIC FLUTE, Pelleas in PELLEAS ET MELISANDE), the Bregenzer Festspiele (Pasterz in KROL ROGER), the Teatro del Liceu Barcelona ( Pasterz in KROL ROGER, Painter/Negro in LULU, Matteo in ARABELLA), Teatro Real Madrid ( Painter/Negro in LULU, Pasterz in KROL ROGER), the Teatro San Carlos Lissabon and Teatro Massimo Palermo ( Loge in DAS RHEINGOLD), Opera National de Rhin Straßbourg (Fritz in DER FERNE KLANG), at the Opera de Bastille Paris und De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam( Matteo in ARABELLA) and at the Grand Theatre de Geneve ( Siegmund in DIE WALKÜRE).

Future plans include in 2015/16 a.o. his debut in the title role in PETER GRIMES from B. Britten at the Staatstheater Bremen, the premiere of MORGEN UND ABEND from Georg F. Haas at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Laca in JENUFA at the New National Theatre Tokyo.

Next debuts are 2016/17 Walther von Stolzing in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG at the Komische Oper Berlin, Parsifal in PARSIFAL, Pinkerton in MADAME BUTTERFLY and Jim Mahoney in AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY at the Staatstheater Mannheim.

In spring 2019, Will Hartmann sang again the "Siegmund" in "Die Walküre" in a revival of the "Ring der Nibelungen" at the Grand Theater de Geneve. One of his next projects will be the role of "Walter" in "Die Passagierin" by Mieczyslaw Weinberg at the Graz Opera House in March 2020.

Will Hartmann has worked with conductors like Giuseppe Sinopoli, Marek Janowski, Sir Colin Davis, Sylvain Cambreling, Christian Thielemann, Antonio Pappano, Philippe Jordan, Michael Boder, Daniel Barenboim, Kurt Masur, Sir Mark Elder, Gabor Ötvos, Donald Runnicles, Richard Hickox, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Charles Mackerras and participated in several radio-, TV -broadcasts and DVD productions.
